The younger of two brothers, Shanks was born in Vancouver and raised in Kamloops, B.C.
He discovered the acting while studying for a buisness degree at UBC. Needing a few arts credits to earn his degree.
He took several acting classes, it was at this point he found his true vocation, and has a passion for acting.
He always like to tell the story of how he watched RDA filming an episode of McGyver at Jericho Beach, which is near to UBC. He was waiting for an audition at UBC and him and some friends went to the beach for a burger and there was Richard Dean Anderson filming.
After he finished college with a BA degree in Fine Arts he travelled to Ontario, where he spent two seasons with the world renowned Stratford Shakespeare Festival.
Michael appeared in stage productions of   "Amadeus" "MacBeth" "The Merry Wives of Windsor" "King Lear" and "The Merchant of Venice"
Michael's other credits include "Love of the Nightingale" "Translations" "Wait Until Dark"
and "Love Labours Lost"
Before getting the part on Stargate Michael guest stared in several TV shows, and Films.
Including "Highlander" "The Commish" "University Hospital" and "Madison"
Films include "A Family Divided" a made for TV film and motion picture "The Call of the Wild"
Since appearing in Stargate he has done two episodes of The Outer Limits
"Mary 25 " and "Manifest Destiny".  He has guest starred on an episdoe of Andromeda as Gaberiel.
Michael has also done short films. "The Artist Circle" with Don S Davis.  Also a small part in "Suspicious River" plus his recent credits are "Door To Door".

Away from the set Michael like to relax by roller blading, and is a keen Ice Hockey player. He also like to Ski.
Michael became a father in 1998 to a beautiful little girl, and loves every minute spends with her.
Michael recently made a rare appearance at a convention in San Deigo Comic Con, and by all accounts thoughly enjoyed it.
